distracted driving

care shifts to individual
the routine becomes the ritual
as intimacy's tried
where feelings once were hot and sweet
the baggage like shellac accretes
as intimacy flies
martini numbness intervenes
creating faux idyllic scenes
as intimacy dies
and though commitment never wanes
attraction physical is strained
by every comely intercession
polite or fueled by indiscretion
like that distinction has any more
than self-delusion at its core
and when the coolness settles in
eternal winter soon begins
